Unit description

Introduces students to the role of the nurse in the care of maternity clients, paediatric clients, and the family members of clients who come in contact with the health care system. The unit consists of two modules focused on each of the client groups, and emphasises the development of problem-solving skills in relation to the personal needs of these clients so that their health is promoted. The assumed prior knowledge required for this unit includes the objectives for all first year Bachelor of Nursing units.

Introduction to family theory and family health
Family structure, functions, roles and relationships
Men and women's health and their parenting roles
Legal and ethical implications of caring for maternal newborn clients in a variety of health care settings
Pharmacotherapeutics for maternal and newborn clients
The role of the nurse in preparing a family for pregnancy
The role of the nurse in antepartum care
The role of the nurse in intrapartum care
The role of the nurse in postpartum and neonatal care
Theoretical foundations of maternal-newborn nursing
 
Module 2: Paediatric care
Theoretical foundations of paediatric nursing
Developmental norms in infancy and childhood
Legal and ethical implications of caring for paediatric clients in a variety of health care settings
Nursing care of congenital conditions and other disorders in infancy
Nursing care of conditions commonly occurring in toddlers and pre-schoolers
Nursing care of conditions commonly occurring in school-age children
Nursing care of conditions occurring in adolescence
