Unit description

Develops knowledge of the principles of paediatric nursing stretching from pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and across the newborn, infant, child and adolescent life stages. Exploring the complex bio-psycho-social factors impacting childhood development; the anatomical and pathophysiological complexities of the paediatric patient at their respective life stages, and understanding their application within child-centred and family-embracing practice. Students develop their critical thinking skills to assess and problem-solve foundational paediatric scenarios in the clinical laboratories

Conception, pregnancy, birth and care of the newborn
Childhood development, health priorities and an introduction to medication safety
The sick child and family-centred nursing
The critically unwell child
Neurodiversity and a strengths-based approach to nursing children and young people
The adolescent patient

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate safe oral and IV medication administration for paediatric patients including accurate medication dosage calculations

articulate the physiological and anatomical differences between children and adults and their consequent pathophysiological implications on common paediatric clinical presentations.

discuss cognitive and developmental milestones which affect children and the impact global and public health has on these

demonstrate critical thinking, assessment and communication with the paediatric patient within a child and family-centred nursing paradigm
