Unit description
Examines the practice of occupational therapy for individuals whose occupational performance has been impacted by a range of cognitive/mental impairments. Students will develop theory driven and practical clinical reasoning skills to guide their approach to assessment and intervention for clients with cognitive impairments.
Unit content
- Introduction to Cognition Assessment and Intervention
- General Principals of Cognition – theoretical overview and models of cognitive function
- Functional anatomy of brain
- Applied Cognition; Sensory Processing; Knowing; Thinking; Doing
- Consciousness, Attention and Orientation
- Perception – assessing sensory function and exploring theories of perception, sensation and pain in relation to occupational performance and treatment
- Memory and Orientation – how these affect occupational performance and occupational therapy intervention
- Executive Function – planning, problem solving and judgement and how these impact occupational performance
- Methods of assessing cognitive functioning and setting appropriate client centred goals
- Application of knowledge to specific case studies
- Assessment of adult, legal decision-making capacity
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
