Unit description

This unit examines the practice of occupational therapy for individuals whose occupational performance has been impacted by a range of cognitive impairments. Students will develop theory driven and practical clinical reasoning skills to guide their approach to assessment and intervention for clients with cognitive impairments.

  1. Introduction to cognition
  2. Assessment and intervention for cognitive impairment
  3. Dementia assessment and intervention
  4. Stroke assessment and intervention
  5. Traumatic brain injury assessment and intervention
  6. Paediatric conditions assessment and intervention

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe theoretical frameworks of cognition and identify cognitive domains that affect occupational performance
2individually and collaboratively analyse and document how occupational performance is impacted by cognitive impairment
3develop appropriate client-centred goals to support occupational performance for people with cognitive impairment
4design and evaluate evidence based occupational therapy interventions to enhance functional cognition required for occupational performance

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
