Unit description

Provides students with the opportunity to undertake reflective practice and develop clinical reasoning skills in community based practice settings. Students develop professional behaviours and competencies, and integrate and apply theory and skills learned in foundational units under the supervision of an occupational therapy practitioner.

Unit content

160 hours of professional experience learning to be undertaken in community engaged learning contexts.

This unit requires students to complete specific assessment tasks in order to pass the unit of study e.g. critical reflections. The students are assessed by the supervisor on Practice Education using the Practice Education Evaluation Sheet and they are specifically assessed on their professional behaviour and attitude, communication skills, documentation skills and basic clinical reasoning.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate a professional and ethical approach to professional practice and clinical reasoning
2demonstrate an emerging level of competence and performance in identified core areas of occupational therapy practice
3demonstrate the development of client-centred practice, professional problem solving and basic clinical reasoning skills relevant to occupational therapy service delivery
4actively participate as a team member within a range of settings to develop skills in the provision of occupational therapy services applicable to the placement environment
5demonstrate verbal communication skills with clients, families, staff and relevant others with increasing levels of independence and create and maintain appropriate client records, reports and other required documentation
6apply initiative and self-direction in practice
7reflect on professional experience learning

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
