Unit description

Provides a critical and reflective introduction to the history and principles of osteopathic medicine, the osteopathic concept of diagnosis and treatment, and commences the palpatory knowledge of somatic tissues by the study of surface anatomy.

  • Philosophy - concept and principles in the context of osteopathic principles
  • Soft tissue methods – general and regional
  • Introduction to Information Literacy

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1develop an understanding of reasoning and critical reflection, especially with regards to the history and principles of osteopathic medicine
2demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of osteopathic medicine, particularly in relation to a holistic health paradigm
3explain the context of osteopathic medicine in the Australian and international health sectors
4demonstrate and explain the basic concepts of osteopathic diagnosis
5demonstrate and reflect upon safe and effective basic soft tissue skills and body handling

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
