Unit description

Provides a critical and reflective introduction to the history and principles of osteopathic medicine, the osteopathic concept of diagnosis and treatment, and introduces safe, reliable application of techniques, scientific evidence of osteopathy, risk assessment and informed consent.

Unit content

Osteopathic philosophy - concept and principles in the context of osteopathic medicine in the Australian and international health sectors
Introduction to principles of palpation, osteopathic diagnosis, assessment, and treatment including practitioner self-care
Introduction to soft tissue methods – general and regional
Introduction to the scientific evidence of osteopathy, risk assessment and informed consent
Range of motion assessment and introduction to articulation
Ethics of osteopathic practice in the context of a regulated health care system

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

reflect on the principles of osteopathic medicine, particularly in relation to a holistic health paradigm

explain the accepted scope of osteopathic practice in the Australian and international health sectors

demonstrate and explain the basic concepts of osteopathic diagnosis

demonstrate and reflect upon safe and effective basic soft tissue skills, body handling and practitioner self-care
