Unit description

Integrates the basic biomedical sciences (functional and clinical anatomy, biomechanics, tissue mechanics, histology and embryology) in preparation for the acquisition of clinical patient assessment skills of the trunk, vertebral column and the pelvic girdle.

Unit content

  1. Functional anatomy of the thorax
  2. Functional anatomy of the lumbar region
  3. Functional anatomy of the thoracic, abdominal viscera
  4. Functional anatomy of the cervical region
  5. Functional anatomy of the pelvic girdle
  6. Radiology of the musculoskeletal system

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate knowledge of advanced clinical and developmental anatomy of the trunk, vertebral column and pelvic girdle regions
2demonstrate knowledge of advanced functional and developmental anatomy of the trunk, vertebral column and pelvic girdle regions.
3describe the general mechanical properties of biological tissues, and the kinematics of human movement of the trunk, vertebral column and pelvic girdle regions
4understand and explain the functional relationship of anatomical features and biomechanics of the vertebral column and pelvic girdle

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of advanced clinical and developmental anatomy of the trunk, vertebral column and pelvic girdle regions
  2. demonstrate knowledge of advanced functional and developmental anatomy of the trunk, vertebral column and pelvic girdle regions.
  3. describe the general mechanical properties of biological tissues, and the kinematics of human movement of the trunk, vertebral column and pelvic girdle regions
