Unit description

Integrates the basic biomedical sciences (functional, clinical anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, tissue mechanics, histology & embryology) in preparation for the acquisition of clinical patient assessment skills of the cranium, thoracic, cervical and upper limb regions

Unit content

Functional anatomy of the ankle and foot for upright gait
Functional anatomy of the lower extremity
Functional anatomy of the wrist and hand for manual dexterity
Functional anatomy of the upper extremity
Functional anatomy of the cranium
Radiologic overview of the limbs and cranium

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate knowledge of advanced clinical anatomy of the cranium, lower limb, and upper limb regions

demonstrate knowledge of advanced functional anatomy of the cranium, thoracic, cervical and upper limb regions

demonstrate knowledge of human arthrokinematics and osteokinematics of biological tissues of the cranium, lower limb and upper limb regions

understand and explain the functional relationship of anatomical features and biomechanics of the cranium, thoracic, cervical and upper limb regions

Prescribed Resources/Equipment

Protective Clothing - Students must purchase and wear the following items to each laboratory class:
- A white laboratory coat (available from Co-op Bookshop).
- Fully enclosed, non-absorbent shoes (of leather, rubber or vinyl) with a sturdy sole and heel. Shoes must fully cover toes, heel, sides and top of foot.
- Safety glasses (available from Co-op Bookshop).
