Unit description

Advances the clinical skills of integrative osteopathic diagnosis and treatment, consolidates the personal and professional application of health principles, develops skills for working collaboratively and further develops and applies critical appraisal skills to osteopathic health practice. Students develop skills in high velocity manipulative techniques in the thoracic and cervical spine and upper limb.

Unit content

  • Practitioner development - problem solving with ethical principles, interprofessional collaboration
  • Osteopathic diagnosis - integration of screening procedures and spinal biomechanical findings including physical and holistic findings using the neuromusculoskeletal model
  • Osteopathic technique - high velocity technique - introduction to thoracic and cervical spine/upper limb/shoulder - integrated direct and indirect approach
  • Introduction to critical appraisal
  • Rehabilitation strategies for chronic pain presentations – clinical guidelines

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1analyse critical questions about the evidence basis of osteopathic health care
2demonstrate and reflect upon an advanced level of contextually relevant patient handling and interactive skills
3demonstrate and explain advanced osteopathic diagnosis including holistic/global dysfunction and the biopsychosocial model of healthcare
4provide the reasoning underpinning the high velocity manipulative techniques in the thoracic and cervical spine and upper limb
5demonstrate the safe and effective use of high velocity manipulative techniques in the thoracic and cervical spine and upper limb

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
