Unit description

Introduces assessment and intervention in the management of the paediatric patient, through knowledge of common presentations and developmental models. Students develop communication, consent, treatment, and assessment skills unique to the paediatric consultation.

Unit content

Informed consent considerations for paediatrics and normal development (0-18 years)
Case history and use of evidence-based reasoning in case studies
Assessment of developmental milestones, neuromusculoskeletal and safety considerations
Paediatric treatment and management
Introduction to common paediatric presentations and evidence-based management
Integrated care in the context of lifespan, family, society and culture

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate an advanced understanding of the osteopathic principles of diagnosis and treatment as it relates to the paediatric patient and the role of parents and care givers

Identify redflags and contraindications to develop safe and effective management plans, including referral for the paediatric patient

critically review osteopathic diagnosis and treatment as it relates to the evidence informed management of paediatric patient

demonstrate safe and effective assessment and management of the paediatric patient
