Unit description

Enhances the student’s skill and knowledge base in osteopathic diagnosis and technique towards a level required for independent osteopathic practice. This includes critical analysis, management of presentations in the immunological, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, obstetrics and genitourinary systems and advanced master classes. 

Unit content

Concepts of advanced osteopathic practice as applied to:

  • The Lymphatic System
  • The autonomic nervous system
  • The Respiratory System
  • The Gastrointestinal System
  • The  Genitourinary  System
  • The  Obstetrics patient
  • The  Gynaecological system

Master Classes in osteopathic management of complex patients.

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1evaluate advanced clinical understanding of the structure and function of the viscera and autonomic nervous system.
2develop and analyse critical questions about the evidence basis of the osteopathic health care concept
3demonstrate and reflect upon safe and effective visceral techniques
4interpret advanced osteopathic diagnosis, including integrating neuro-musculoskeletal, behavioural, energy expenditure and exchange and nutritional models
5integrate advanced integrative osteopathic techniques
6formulate advanced clinical reasoning in the osteopathic management of patient presentations in the obstetrical, gynaecological, genitourinary and gastrointestinal systems
7demonstrate professional skills in readiness for independent practice

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
