Unit description

Enhances the student’s skill and knowledge base in osteopathic diagnosis and technique towards a level required for independent osteopathic practice. This includes critical analysis, and development of interprofessional patient-centred management strategies for diverse populations across the lifespan. In this unit, students will analyse osteopathic health care concepts and incorporate scientific evidence (including the determinants of health) into patient management.

Unit content

  1. Osteopathic diagnosis and management of the autonomic nervous system
  2. Osteopathic diagnosis and management of the gastrointestinal system
  3. Osteopathic diagnosis and management of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems
  4. Osteopathic diagnosis and management of the genitourinary system
  5. Osteopathic diagnosis and management of the gynaecological and obstetrics systems
  6. Osteopathic diagnosis and management for the older population

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate advanced clinical understanding of body systems and the integration of safe and effective osteopathic diagnosis and treatment approaches at a level appropriate for independent osteopathic practice
2incorporate scientific evidence and determinants of health into clinical reasoning and management strategies
3develop interprofessional patient-centred management strategies that facilitate participation in work and activities of daily living for diverse populations across the lifespan
4engage in an inclusive and collaborative model of practice to communicate appropriately and effectively with diverse populations

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
