Unit description

Epidemiology is the study of diseases at a population level. Students examine how disease occurrence is measured and studied in a population, how they are linked to causal agents and how they can ultimately be managed or prevented.

Unit content

  1. Introduction to health and disease
  2. Epidemiological studies and biostatistics
  3. Causation and prevention of disease
  4. Non-communicable and communicable diseases 
  5. Environmental and occupational epidemiology
  6. Clinical epidemiology and health policy and planning

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate competence in performing calculations associated with measurements of disease burden used in epidemiology
2apply appropriate methodologies to identify and assess the causes of disease
3relate the natural history of disease to models for disease screening and prevention
4evaluate the environmental, social and cultural determinants of health in the Australian context

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
