Unit description

Introduces students to diabetes management strategies including: different technologies to monitor blood glucose levels; glucose-lowering medicines and injection technique; nutrition therapy; physical activity guidelines; and approaches to psychosocial assessment.  Comprehensive person-centred assessment and care planning methods are explored.  The interdisciplinary nature of diabetes education and management is examined.

  • Nutrition therapy
  • Physical activity and sedentary behaviour
  • Self-monitoring of blood glucose
  • Diabetes medications management
  • Psychosocial issues in diabetes

The unit learning outcomes address elements from Domain 1 (Clinical Practice), 3 (Research and Quality Improvement) and 5 (Leadership and Advocacy) of the National Competency Standards for Credentialled Diabetes Educators.

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1examine the process of self-monitoring of blood glucose and interpret results
2compare and contrast glucose lowering medications used in diabetes management
3apply nutrition therapy and physical activity guidelines to the management of pre-diabetes and diabetes
4discuss the psychosocial issues associated with diabetes self-management and the role of the multidisciplinary healthcare team

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
