Unit description

Introduces participants to the emerging discipline of risk and resilience engineering. Participants will examine real-life case studies of crisis and disaster events in critical infrastructure, engineering, and asset management organisations.

Unit content

Risk management including standards and frameworks

Resilience engineering theory and practice

Managing Safety, Safety culture and safety climate

Developing management practices that foster resilience

Case studies in risk and disaster management

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1identify, apply and critically discuss risk and resilience engineering principles
2identify and critically analyse risk situations and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of how various theories, evaluation and processes tools can be used to manage events or risks.
3critically analyse and apply risk management theories and frameworks to review experiences of organisations for improving organisational effectiveness

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
