Unit description

Explores and compares a diverse range of healthcare systems, policies and practices, and their impacting factors. Includes the exploration of a range of inputs, throughputs and outputs based on system theory approaches.

Unit content

  • National and international healthcare systems, policies and practices
  • Population health outcomes
  • Social, cultural, environmental, economic and political factors impacting health care systems, policies and practices (individual level/micro, meso/organisational level, and macro/societal level)
  • Private, public, regulated and deregulated health care systems, policies and practices
  • International comparisons for health care systems, policies and practices
  • Envisioning the future of healthcare systems, policies, and practices

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1explore the differences between healthcare systems, policies and practices at national and international levels
2critique and distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of private, public, regulated and deregulated healthcare systems, policies and practices
3analyse and critique a range of social, cultural, environmental, economic and political factors as well as various types of population health outcomes to evaluate the success of healthcare systems, policies and practices
4propose a vision for the success of a healthcare system, policy and practice within health, social and community care settings

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. explore the differences between healthcare systems, policies and practices at national and international levels
  2. critique and distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of private, public, regulated and deregulated healthcare systems, policies and practices
  3. analyse and critique a range of social, cultural, environmental, economic and political factors as well as various types of population health outcomes to evaluate the success of healthcare systems, policies and practices
