Unit description

Presents advanced pharmacology and its relationship to podiatric disorders. Students learn about the requirements to become an endorsed prescriber with the Podiatry Board of Australia, using case-based learning.

Unit content

1. Introduction to safe and effective podiatric prescribing

2. Managing podiatric Infections

3. Managing pain and anxiety

4. Safe and effective use of anti-inflammatory medication

5. Local anaesthetics and corticosteroids for podiatry

6. Review of safe and effective prescribing practice in the podiatry setting

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1apply their knowledge of pain management and management of infection in advanced podiatric practice
2evaluate and interpret indications and contra-indications for individual drugs and drug classes available to podiatrists, management protocols for safe use and dealing with complications
3identify and evaluate the issues surrounding prescribing drugs, awareness of drug prescription protocols, knowledge of the restricted schedule drug formularies and Podiatry Board of Australia’s requirements for endorsement
4apply their knowledge of adverse drug reactions, pharmacological principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, classification of drugs and pharmacological principles of drugs and effects as it relates to the drug formulary available to Australian podiatrists
5devise management plans that appropriately communicate their knowledge of the Podiatry Board of Australia's requirements for registration as an endorsed prescriber.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
