Availabilities:

2024 unit offering information will be available in November 2023

Unit description

Introduces the basics of motion in one and two dimensions. Students will learn about mechanics, which is the interaction of force and motion, and about waves in water and air. This will develop the foundational knowledge needed to understand how physics describes the action of forces and apply it to a variety of different fields such as engineering, human body movement and projectiles.

Unit content

Module 1: Kinematics

Module 2: Two-dimensional kinematics

Module 3: Forces and Newton’s Laws of Motion

Module 4 Work, energy & power

Module 5 Optics and waves

Module 6 Statics and torque

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts of motions, waves and mechanics across various fields of application
2apply knowledge of motions, waves and mechanics to solve simple industry-related problems
3communicate how properties of motions, waves and mechanics are used to inspire emerging trends across various fields of application
4conduct experiments involving motions, waves and mechanics to measure and analyse basic design concepts

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts of motions, waves and mechanics across various fields of application
  2. apply knowledge of motions, waves and mechanics to solve simple industry-related problems
  3. communicate how properties of motions, waves and mechanics are used to inspire emerging trends across various fields of application
  4. conduct experiments involving motions, waves and mechanics to measure and analyse basic design concepts

Teaching and assessment

Notice

Intensive offerings may or may not be scheduled in every teaching period. Please refer to the timetable for further details.

Southern Cross University employs different teaching methods within units to provide students with the flexibility to choose the mode of learning that best suits them. SCU academics strive to use the latest approaches and, as a result, the learning modes and materials may change. The most current information regarding a unit will be provided to enrolled students at the beginning of the teaching period.
