Introduces students to the environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainability, the governance of sustainability, related concepts, issues, problems and solutions, and the remit of professional planning ethics. Students learn about the nature of sustainable planning and related policy prescriptions. Key sustainable planning and urban design models and approaches are investigated. The unit is structured around key sustainable planning themes, including the evolution and complexity of sustainable planning, the role of local government, demographic considerations, planning for sustainable communities, developing sustainability literacy, and the evolution and complexity of ethics in professional planning. Students engage in problem based learning: an analysis of planning problems, issues and potential solutions.
