Unit description

Introduces students to the use and interpretation of diagnostic imaging and laboratory modalities in the assessment of clients. Students will learn through case based studies.

Scientific principles and safety of diagnostic imaging modalities
- Plain film radiography
- Computed tomography
- Magnetic resonance imaging
- Diagnostic ultrasound
- Scintigraphy
- Other techniques
Radiographic views and anatomy
Systematic interpretation of diagnostic imaging for lower limb conditions
Referral for diagnostic imaging
Laboratory and hospital investigations
Integration of diagnostic imaging and laboratory investigations in the assessment of a patient

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

explain the scientific principles of diagnostic imaging techniques and laboratory investigations

interpret laboratory investigations, diagnostic imaging and reports in the assessment of lower limb conditions

demonstrate use of diagnostic ultrasound in the assessment of lower limb conditions

demonstrate appropriate referral for diagnostic imaging in the assessment of lower limb conditions

formulate conclusions regarding a patient’s health through integration of patient history, physical examination, and findings of diagnostic imaging and other assessments
