Unit description

Examination of effective management of human capital, and leadership as determinants of project success. Students explore theories and practices of contemporary leadership and management. Various leadership styles will be canvassed and applied reflexively within the context of project management.

Unit content

  1. The Evolution of Western Management and Leadership theory
  2. Positive, Transformational and Authentic Leadership
  3. Managing Culture as Leaders
  4. Ethical Leadership and Decision Making
  5. Politics and Philosophy in Leadership
  6. Reflective Practice in Project Leadership

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1Critically assess leadership style, management skills, communication skills and ethical decision-making, both personally and within the context of managing projects
2Apply individual, and team-working skills, knowledge and conceptual models in the context of managing projects
3Critically analyse contemporary project management literature concerning the roles of leaders and managers in influencing projects and achieving project management goals
4Demonstrate an ability to engage in continuous reflection and learning and apply that reflexivity within the context of project management.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
