PROJ5002 - Project Management Principles

Unit description

Examination of effective management of human capital, and leadership as determinants of project success. Students explore theories and practices of contemporary leadership and management. Various leadership styles will be canvassed and applied reflexively within the context of project management.

Module 1: The evolution of western management and leadership theory

Module 2: Positive, transformational and authentic leadership and managing culture and inclusion

Module 3: Ethical leadership and decision making

Module 4: Politics and philosophy in leadership

Module 5: Contemporary project leadership

Module 6: Reflective practice in project leadership

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Critically assess leadership style, management skills, communication skills and ethical decision-making, both personally and within the context of managing projects

Apply individual, and team-working skills, knowledge and conceptual models in the context of managing projects

Critically analyse contemporary project management literature concerning the roles of leaders and managers in influencing projects and achieving project management goals

Demonstrate an ability to engage in continuous reflection and learning and apply that reflexivity within the context of project management.
