Unit description

Equips students with conceptual, methodological and practical knowledge and skills to enable them to design and conduct independent behavioural research. Students will learn how to develop a research question, select an appropriate research design to answer the research question, collect and analyse data, interpret findings and communicate these findings in a written and oral format. Students will gain hands on experience of conducting research using a (quantitative) correlational design.

  1. Generating real-world research ideas through searching and appraising existing literature
  2. Common research designs and methodologies
  3. Designing and conducting quantitative research
  4. Conducting applied research as a scientist-practitioner
  5. Analysing and interpreting data
  6. Presenting your findings from research in different formats

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

2evaluate various research designs, methodologies, and analytical approaches to make informed and culturally sensitive decisions
3co-design, conduct, and analyse a methodologically and ethically sound study to answer a real-world research question
4appropriately communicate the study and its findings using appropriate conventions

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
