Unit description

Covers respect for cultural diversity, cultural self-awareness, ethical practice, professional and inter-professional communication and the core counselling and interviewing skills essential for psychological practice. Key foundational ethical, legal and professional competencies are taught including a working knowledge of the APS Code of Ethics.  Students will learn culturally-responsive communication skills, and engage with cultural beliefs around mental health and well-being, including their own and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. Verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are covered.

Unit content

  • Foundations of applied ethics and ethical decision-making models (APS code of ethics)
  • Legal frameworks and ethical principles in psychological practice
  • Core counselling skills
  • Verbal, written and inter-professional communication skills for psychologists
  • Different cultural perspectives on mental health and wellbeing and culturally-responsive practice
  • Reflective practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1understand, analyse, manage, and reflect on ethical issues by applying the APS Code of Ethics, decision-making models, and legal frameworks
2demonstrate professional oral communication skills, including counselling and interview skills
3demonstrate ability to employ professional and inter-professional communication skills, in a culturally responsive manner, with socially and culturally diverse clients typical to the placement and where possible across the lifespan
4demonstrate an understanding of culturally-responsive practice, including culturally appropriate therapeutic approaches, and the ability to engage in self-reflection

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
