Unit description

Introduces common presenting psychological and developmental disorders that occur in children and adolescents, including depression, anxiety, and neurodevelopmental delay. This unit covers test selection, administration, scoring and interpretation of assessment tools that align with diagnostic criteria and classification systems. A consideration of issues relating to assessment and diagnosis of psychological and developmental conditions in children and adolescents from socially and/or culturally diverse backgrounds is provided throughout the unit. Child protection and mandatory reporting requirements are also included.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1differentiate between signs of psychological and developmental disorders and developmentally typical behaviour considering social and cultural background
2critique assessment and classification systems for psychological and developmental disorders and symptom manifestation across developmental stages
3demonstrate standardised psychological test administration, interpretation and communication of assessment results with caregivers and other health professionals using appropriate language
4identify signs that children and adolescents are at risk and in need of protection and take appropriate action in accordance with ethical and legal requirements

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. differentiate between signs of psychological and developmental disorders and developmentally typical behaviour considering social and cultural background
