Unit description

Prepares students for speech pathology practice for working with adults with swallowing difficulties as a consequence of a range of structural and/or functional impairments. The unit also develops knowledge and skills related to speech pathology practice of the management of swallowing and feeding disorders in non-complex  paediatric cases.

Unit content

The unit content will be broadly divided into two modules:
  1. Speech pathology management of swallowing and feeding in children
  2. Speech pathology management of swallowing and feeding in adults

Both modules will address issues related to:

  • normal anatomy, physiology, and neurology associated with swallow function;
  • the impact of health conditions on swallowing and feeding;
  • signs, symptoms, risk factors, and prognoses associated with swallowing and feeding disorders;
  • speech pathology assessment of swallowing and feeding disorders;
  • speech pathology interventions for swallowing and feeding disorders;
  • application of principles related to client-centred practice, inter-professional practice, ethical practice, and evidence-based practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1identify and evaluate risk factors, signs, and symptoms associated with swallowing and feeding disorders in children
2plan and evaluate speech pathology practices for children with non-complex swallowing and/or feeding disorders
3identify and explain the impact of neuroanatomical and neuropsychological changes on swallowing function in acquired health conditions
4evaluate, plan, and justify speech pathology assessment for investigating concerns related to swallowing and/or feeding disorders in adults and/or children
5plan and justify speech pathology interventions for adults with swallowing and/or feeding disorders

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. identify and evaluate risk factors, signs, and symptoms associated with swallowing and feeding disorders in children
  2. plan and evaluate speech pathology practices for children with non-complex swallowing and/or feeding disorders
  3. identify and explain the impact of neuroanatomical and neuropsychological changes on swallowing function in acquired health conditions
  4. evaluate, plan, and justify speech pathology assessment for investigating concerns related to swallowing and/or feeding disorders in adults and/or children
