Unit description

Develops students’ knowledge and skills in planning, implementing and monitoring speech pathology treatment of adults with acquired communication disability. Applies knowledge of theoretical frameworks, research evidence, and the perspectives of clients, to design communication interventions and involve communication partners in both individual and group therapy.  Students are provided with an opportunity to acquire, practise and demonstrate entry-level speech pathology skills that underpin clinical practice. 

Unit content

  1. Introduction to treatment of acquired communication disorders in adults: Goal setting, Evidence-based practice, Service delivery approaches and Outcome measurement 
  2. Treatment for aphasia 1: evidence-based treatment approaches across the ICF and treatment planning considerations
  3. Treatment for aphasia 2: practical application of treatment approaches
  4. Treatment for dysarthria: evidence-based treatment approaches across the ICF, treatment planning considerations, and practical application 
  5. Treatment for apraxia of speech: evidence-based treatment approaches across the ICF, treatment planning considerations, and practical application
  6. Treatment for cognitive communication disorders: evidence-based treatment approaches across the ICF, treatment planning considerations, and practical application

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1plan and justify speech pathology interventions and their implementation for adults with acquired language and/or cognitive communication impairments
2plan and justify holistic speech pathology interventions for adults with acquired motor speech disorders
3select and demonstrate intervention procedures for working with adults with acquired communication disorders

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. plan and justify speech pathology interventions and their implementation for adults with acquired language and/or cognitive communication impairments
  2. plan and justify holistic speech pathology interventions for adults with acquired motor speech disorders
  3. select and demonstrate intervention procedures for working with adults with acquired communication disorders
