Introduces students to the neural mechanisms that underlie communication and swallowing and to relationships across Neuroscience, Neuropsychology and Speech Pathology. Students learn about the brain, cranial nerves and the motor and sensory systems involved in hearing, speech, language and swallowing. Information is also provided about neuropathology and symptoms associated with particular sites of lesion.
Topic 1: Cortical divisions of the central nervous system and areas of the brain linked with dimensions of speech and language functions.
Topic 2: Cortical divisions of the central nervous system and areas of the brain linked with swallowing functions.
Topic 3: The cerebellum and brainstem in relation to communication.
Topic 4: Cranial nerves involved in hearing and speech.
Topic 5: Cranial nerves relevant for swallowing.
Topic 6: Neuro-sensory organization of speech and hearing.
Topic 7: Neuro-motor control of speech.
Topic 8: Central nervous system lesions, neuropathology and general neural basis for communication problems.
Topic 9: Speech and language symptoms associated with particular central nervous system lesions and neuropathology.
Topic 10: Auditory and swallowing symptoms associated with particular central nervous system lesions and neuropathology.
Topic 11: Effects of lesions to different components of motor and sensory systems.
Topic 12: Relationships across Neuroscience, Neuropsychology and Speech Pathology.
