Availabilities:

2024 unit offering information will be available in November 2023

Unit description

Develops skills in statistical analysis that will allow students to critically evaluate research and to conduct and report analyses appropriately. These skills will provide future psychologists the ability to maintain currency in an ever-evolving industry and researchers to independently analyse data and interpret outcomes in their field. The skills learned in this unit are also highly sought after in many industries.

Unit content

  1. Statistical concepts, such as variance
  2. Interpreting p-values, effect sizes, and confidence intervals
  3. Assumptions of statistical tests, their importance, and how to test them
  4. Multiple regression analyses
  5. Between-groups analysis of variance (ANOVA)
  6. Repeated-measures ANOVA

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe the underlying logic of statistical analyses and apply this logic to diverse research-based scenarios
2conduct advanced statistical analyses on a variety of authentic data sets
3evaluate the appropriateness of analytic approaches to answer research questions in psychology
4interpret the results of analyses using a variety of approaches and communicate this using approved conventions in psychology
