Unit description

Part 2 of 2 units comprising the first social work field placement. Engages students in 400 hours (across SWRK5005 and SWRK5006) of supervised social work practice developing professional skills, knowledge and values in line with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units to practice in a real organisation. (SWRK5006 is completed in the same human service organisation in which the student completed SWRK5005).

Unit content

  1. Forming, maintaining and ending ethical and professional relationships with clients, colleagues and others
  2. Communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders from diverse populations
  3. Analysing team work and other group dynamics within the workplace
  4. Understanding, developing and applying evidence based social work practice relevant to the setting
  5. Critically reflecting on development of own communication and practice skills
  6. Making effective use of professional supervision
  7. Identifying gaps in learning and ongoing learning needs

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1form, maintain and end professional and ethical social work relationships with clients and colleagues in a human service organisation
2demonstrate and critically reflect on effective communication with clients, colleagues and other key stakeholders
3analyse the organisation, its location within wider social systems and its relationship with other organisations, such as auspicing bodies and funding agencies
4analyse the ways in which a social work service is provided within the organisation
5make use of professional supervision to increase their learning about social work practice.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
