Unit description

Part 2 of 2 units comprising the second social work field placement. Engages students in 600 hours (across SWRK6005 and SWRK6006) of supervised social work practice, in a different human service organisation to which they completed the first social work field placement (SWRK5005-6-).  Develops professional skills, knowledge and values in line with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units in the course to practice in a real organisation. Emphasis is placed on the use of research to inform social work practice and policy change. (SWRK6006 is completed in the same human service organisation in which the student completed SWRK6005).

  1. Forming, maintaining and ending professional relationships with clients, colleagues and others
  2. Communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders
  3. Presenting to colleagues and other professionals
  4. Evaluate own practice by gaining feedback from clients and community members
  5. Using research to inform social work practice and policy change
  6. Leadership roles within human service organisations and the health and community service sector
  7. Developing a professional practice framework that draws on a wide range of social work knowledge

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1form, maintain and end professional and ethical social work relationships with clients and colleagues in a human service organisation.
2demonstrate and critically reflect on effective communication with clients, colleagues and other key stakeholders.
3analyse the ways in which a social work service is provided within the organisation.
4use and critically reflect on social work knowledge, including theoretical and research knowledge, to inform social work practice in this agency and to inform policy change.
5engage in professional supervision to increase their learning about social work practice, and identify learning needs that extend beyond graduation.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
