Unit description

Engages students in 600 hours of supervised social work practice, in a different human service organisation to which they completed the first social work field placement. Develops professional skills, knowledge and values in line with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units in the course to practice in a real organisation. Emphasis is placed on the use of research to inform social work practice and policy change.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1form, maintain and end professional and ethical social work relationships with clients, colleagues and supervisors in a human service organisation at the level of a beginning practitioner
2demonstrate and critically reflect on professional identity, practice skills and practice approaches with clients, colleagues, supervisors and other key stakeholders, and identify learning needs that extend beyond graduation
3critically analyse and reflect on the evidence-base for and ways in which social work services are provided in the organisation and wider practice field and how this addresses client needs and enhances social justice
4use and critically reflect on social work knowledge, including theoretical and research knowledge, to inform social work practice and policy in a range of settings, and draw on this to inform professional identity and articulate a professional practice framework

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
