Unit description

Provides early and mid career researchers with an opportunity to plan their research career within contemporary higher education. The unit explores the international debates on quality of research undertaken in higher education. Participants develop the research component of their professional portfolio and develop an action plan.

Unit content

1. The international context within which quality research in universities is defined and measured 
2. Being a researcher - knowledge and abilities: subject knowledge, research methods, information literacy, higher order abilities and creativity 
3. Being a researcher - personal effectiveness: personal qualities, self-management, professional and career development 
4. Being a researcher - organisation: professional conduct, research management and finance, funding and resources 
5. Being a researcher - engagement, influence and impact: working with others, communication and dissemination, engagement and impact 
6. Academic career planning and portfolio development (research component).

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
