Unit description

Provides students with an understanding of the key aspects of an early childhood educator's principles and practices (DEEWR, 2009) as it relates to the National Quality Standards (ACECQA, 2020). The five principles and eight practices of the EYLF are critiqued as they apply to early childhood educators’ practice. The importance of flexible and sustainable learning environments for children’s learning and development is considered and analysed.

Unit content

Module 1: Principles and practices of the EYLF (DEEWR, 2009) and the NQS (ACECQA, 2020) 

Module 2: High expectations and equity 

Module 3: Planning and implementing learning through play 

Module 4: Assessing and monitoring children’s learning to inform provision and to support children in achieving learning outcomes 

Module 5: Creating physical and social learning environments that have a positive impact on children’s learning

Module 6: Bringing it altogether: adopting holistic approaches of principles and practices 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe and apply the key principles and practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (DEEWR, 2009)
2understand and analyse the importance of relationships and how to build and foster them with children, families, staff and the community respecting the diversities of their histories and background
3develop the knowledge and skills regarding setting up learning environments for children that are flexible and sustainable both indoors and outdoors
4reflect upon, and critique the holistic approaches of principles and practices

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. describe and apply the key principles and practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (DEEWR, 2009)
  2. understand and analyse the importance of relationships and how to build and foster them with children, families, staff and the community respecting the diversities of their histories and background
  3. develop the knowledge and skills regarding setting up learning environments for children that are flexible and sustainable both indoors and outdoors
