Unit description

Concerned with the complexity, diversity and changing nature of contemporary constructions of childhood and families within the community. The unit builds knowledge and understanding regarding contemporary and diverse issues facing children, families and communities, fostering attitudes of compassion and engagement in early childhood education and care. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory is applied throughout the unit as a focus on children, families and communities. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are embedded throughout the unit. The influence of historical, social, political, economic and socio-economic factors are considered as an influence upon children’s everyday lives.

Module 1: Understanding children, families and communities: historical and contemporary perspectives 

Module 2: Supporting children’s, families’ and community wellbeing

Module 3: Cultural belonging, being and becoming at home in Australia

Module 4: Diversity of contexts of children, families and communities

Module 5: Social justice for children, families and communities

Module 6: Linking policy to practice.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1compare and critique historical and contemporary constructions of childhood and families, including those pertaining to Indigenous childhoods
2identify the ways to ensure children feel that they are belonging, being, and becoming
3explain the diverse range of issues affecting children, families and communities including social, economic and educational policies and their impact upon service provision for children and families
4critically analyse texts, images, and songs in terms of the construction of childhood, and families across diverse contexts

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. compare and critique historical and contemporary constructions of childhood and families, including those pertaining to Indigenous childhoods
  2. identify the ways to ensure children feel that they are belonging, being, and becoming
  3. explain the diverse range of issues affecting children, families and communities including social, economic and educational policies and their impact upon service provision for children and families
  4. critically analyse texts, images, and songs in terms of the construction of childhood, and families across diverse contexts
