Unit description

Develops conceptual knowledge of the holistic approach to curriculum in the early childhood setting. A focus is on an integrated approach to learning key curriculum areas of science and technology, mathematics, creative arts, language, history and physical wellbeing for children aged from birth to five years. Students develop children’s conceptual knowledge of these areas, with links made to the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) (DEEWR, 2009) and the National Quality Standard (ACECQA, 2020). 

Unit content

Module 1: Defining curriculum in early childhood

Module 2:  Integrating curriculum approaches in Early Childhood Education (ECE)

Module 3: Integrating science, mathematics and technology into ECE

Module 4: Integrating language and literature, and creative arts into ECE

Module 5: Integrating physical and emotional wellbeing into ECE

Module 6: Integrating history and culture, time, equity and social justice into ECE

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe and justify curriculum in early childhood education and care services
2understand and demonstrate conceptual knowledge related to key learning areas for children from birth to five years
3argue, with reference to the literature, how curriculum key learning areas can be applied to support children’s learning
4create and analyse learning environments of curriculum key learning areas for children’s development and learning explain the role of the early childhood educator

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
