2024 unit offering information will be available in November 2023

Unit description

Historical developments and contemporary factors that influence the Australian Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industries are critically analysed. Students explain the properties and performance of a range of textile fibres, yarns and fabric. Manufacturing processes are described and experimentation is applied to analyse the molecular and morphological structure and properties of fibres and fabrics. Colouring techniques are selected and functional end-use applications of textiles are identified. Innovations and emerging textile technologies are explored and discussed.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1explain the relationship between molecular and morphological structure and the properties of fibres
2describe the structure and properties of a range of textile yarns and fabric
3identify the use of finishing techniques to enhance fabric performance
4identify principles and processes of colour to fibres, yarns and fabrics
5apply a range of functional and aesthetic tests to evaluate fabric properties
6identify appropriate fabrics for a range of end uses
7critically analyse the history of and contemporary aspects for the Australian Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industries.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. explain the relationship between molecular and morphological structure and the properties of fibres
  2. describe the structure and properties of a range of textile yarns and fabric
  3. identify the use of finishing techniques to enhance fabric performance
  4. identify principles and processes of colour to fibres, yarns and fabrics
  5. apply a range of functional and aesthetic tests to evaluate fabric properties
  6. identify appropriate fabrics for a range of end uses
  7. critically analyse the history of and contemporary aspects for the Australian Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industries.
