Unit description

Focuses on students' knowledge and understanding about issues related to social and emotional wellbeing, reflecting a person's capacity to function well in society and lead a fulfilling and productive life. The concepts of resilience and mental health are examined and strategies to facilitate connectedness and belonging, positive and high expectations, and opportunities for meaningful participation are discussed. A particular focus is placed on children's experiences of change, loss and grief.

Unit content

Module One: Theoretical foundations of children and young people's social and emotional wellbeing
Module Two: Supporting and promoting children and young people's social and emotional wellbeing
Module Three: Understanding children and young people's experiences of change, loss and grief

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1examine notions of social and emotional wellbeing, the continuum of mental health and notions of resilience
2identify and discuss the causes, indicators and risk factors associated with children's mental health, including issues of change, loss and grief
3explain the role that schools, community organisations and professions, governments and families play in promoting health
4critically evaluate a range of health promotion models, strategies, services and resources designed to support health promotion with particular focus on social and emotional wellbeing
5reflect on ways they can better support children and young people's health within their own professional context.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. examine notions of social and emotional wellbeing, the continuum of mental health and notions of resilience
  2. identify and discuss the causes, indicators and risk factors associated with children's mental health, including issues of change, loss and grief
  3. explain the role that schools, community organisations and professions, governments and families play in promoting health
