Unit description
Provides students with skills in writing specifically for young readers by investigating the development of children's and young adult fiction and the demands being made on producers of texts for young people in contemporary times. Students will build a portfolio through creative original works relevant to the young adult market. Intended as a second/third-year unit.

Topic 1. Developmental influences on children's and young adults' publishing
Topic 2. The position of the writer and reader in writing for young people
Topic 3. Gender, race and sub-cultures in young adult fiction
Topic 4. Ethical issues and writing for young people
Topic 5. Writing and publishing young people's fiction
Topic 6. Workshopping drafting
