Unit description

Introduces students to a range of different writing strategies and techniques for short creative prose, specifically short fiction, through practical work and a range of readings. Students also develop drafting and self-editing skills.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

recognise a range of writing strategies and features of the short story form

demonstrate an ability to devise and develop a short story within the genre of their own choosing

understand their own writing practice in the context of short fiction forms, genres, and traditions

reflect critically and constructively on their own and others' writing.
