Unit of Study OCCU3003 Work Integrated Learning in Occupational Therapy III (2023)

Unit description

This unit provides students with an opportunity to refine their occupational therapy knowledge, behaviours and competencies. Students will be required to initiate application of theory and skills learned in previous units and enhance professional reasoning, reflection and communication skills in preparation for graduate practice. Students will complete a 400 hour (10 weeks full time) work integrated learning experience under the supervision of one or more occupational therapy clinicians in remote and metropolitan locations throughout Australia.

Unit content

Students will complete a module and seminar prior to commencing their work integrated learning experience. This initial learning will address work readiness and support students to prepare for the expectations related to their external placement. The work integrated learning experience will enable students to develop professional knowledge and skills as articulated in the SPEF-R2 (Student Practice Evaluation Form – Revised 2). These include:

• Professional behaviour
• Self-management skills
• Co-worker communication
• Communication skills
• Documentation
• Information gathering
• Service provision
• Service evaluation

During the external learning experience, students will attend two online tutorials which will explore application of learning and skill development specific to their placement experiences. Students will attend a final tutorial to debrief from the external learning experience.
