Year 11 and 12 students, come and get a taste of university life and future career opportunities at this year’s Southern Cross University Taster Days. Get behind-the-scenes access to our campuses and an in-depth look into some of our specialist discipline areas and the amazing opportunities our students can participate in.

We will also be running STAR Early Offer program application sessions, exclusively for students in attendance.
Admission is free but registrations are essential as places are limited.

Morning Session 9am – 12.30pm

Business, Tourism & Information Technology: Designing and Planning a Music Festival

In this simulation of real life design and planning, students will work in groups to design and plan for a three day music festival.

They will be able to consult experts in event management, IT, marketing and financial management in order to achieve their goal.

Afternoon session 12.30pm – 3pm - Humanities and Law

HumanitiesPractising active citizenship; So you want to work in welfare?; and a Taste of the Arts 
Are you passionate about social justice? Experience how a degree in the arts, social science or welfare could take you towards a rewarding career. Engage with our academic staff in our speed sessions: get a taste of the arts and explore the disciplines from history, to culture, to politics, and science; practice active citizenship in social science; and get involved with our ‘so you want to work in welfare’ case study.

Law: Illegal But Still Valid
Interested in a career in law? Whether you want to be a solicitor or barrister, or aspire to use your knowledge of the law to contribute in government organisations or corporate sector, a career in law can open up a world of options.

This session will get you thinking: if something was done unlawfully, it should be treated as null and void from the very first... or should it? When do the courts allow exceptions while trying not to play favourites?

Register for this interactive scenario based session which places our environmental footprint as a core issue for discussion. You will be involved in an inquiry that leads you to better understand the issues surrounding this complex concern. Then explore how major issues can be discussed and addressed at an early childhood, primary and secondary educational level.

Gnibi:
Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples aims to facilitate students to experience a teaching and learning process that is founded on principles of social justices, cultural integrity and inclusion. Appreciate and learn about indigenous world views by exploring past and present histories with a talk on indigenous knowledge.

Education:

You will be involved in an inquiry that leads you to better understand the issues surrounding this complex concern. Arts:
Ever heard of the saying ‘you are what you eat’? Well, in this session you will be invited to consume (or refuse foods) seen as edible and inedible then explore the stories that link this judgement to our culture, heritage, politics and taste. When it comes to eating insects there’s more than just a good and sustainable source of protein at play!

Social Sciences:
In this workshop, develop skills and capabilities to critically analyse social arrangements and identify social problems and to envision strategies for change.

All Day Session 9am – 3pm Creative and Performing Arts: Creativity Master Class

Ignite your creative flare and experience a full day of creative expression, interpretation and production with our Creativity Master Class! Whether your interest lies in art, design, music, creative writing, or digital media & communications, this hands on and practical workshop is for you.

Morning Session 9am – 12.30pm Engineering: Engineering Computer aided design & Environmental Sciences: Shark dissection

Engineering:
Why is computer aided design important for mechanical design? Discover some of the exciting software that our engineering students get to use throughout their degree. In this session you will received a short introduction of Solidworks which allows you to design and develop products, then later in the session, bring your Solidworks model to life by using a 3D printer to manufacture it!

Environmental Sciences:
Witness A/Prof Bucher will perform a shark dissection on a 1.06 m spinner shark that was caught in the North Coast shark meshing trial. Get involved as we dissect the animal to obtain tissue samples on behalf of NSW DPI for distribution to various researchers. In the process you will discuss shark identification, anatomy and ecology as well as discussing the various strategies for reducing the risk of shark-human interactions.

Afternoon session 12.30pm – 3pm Business & Tourism: Business, Tourism & IT Master Quiz! and Law: A brief legal history of the Mars Bar

Business & Tourism:
Come along to test out your knowledge and understanding of the three areas covered by courses in the School of Business and Tourism in this light hearted, fun but informative quiz. Will you be on the winning team?

Join us for a journey through many interesting areas of the law in the company of this wonderful sweet.
