Dr Nicole Rogers is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law and Justice at Southern Cross University. Prior to commencing work at the then University of New England Northern Rivers in 1992, she worked briefly in private practice and in a research capacity at the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. Nicole has two first class Honours degrees in Arts and Law from the University of Sydney, a Masters in Natural Resources Law from the University of Wollongong, and a PhD in Law from Southern Cross University. Her PhD thesis is entitled the 'The Play(fulness) of Law' and involved interdisciplinary research into performance studies theory and law
Nicole is one of six academic staff members who established the law school at Southern Cross University in 1993 and developed its law degree. She has been responsible for writing, developing and teaching the core units of Environmental Law and Constitutional Law since the law degree was first introduced. She has taught and assisted in the development of over sixteen other units in both the law and paralegal degrees since 1993.
Nicole has published widely in areas as disparate as environmental activism, gene technology, anti-terrorism law and performance studies theory and the law. Her most recent research is in the areas of wild law, climate change litigation and climate change activism. In 2014, she instigated and then co-led the three year Wild Law Judgment project, which resulted in 2017 in a co-edited Routledge publication entitled Law as if Earth really mattered: the Wild Law Judgment project. Nicole has served as the lawyer of the University Human Research Ethics Committee for ten years. She has been an active member of various environmental organisations, including the North East Forest Alliance, Beyond Zero Emissions and the Australian Wild Laws Alliance (now Australian Earth Laws Alliance).
