“One of the highlights of my university experience has been putting the theory into practice and seeing where I could create change.”

Osteopathy student and rugby player
Something that really intrigued me about osteopathy was the ability to help people get out of pain and improve people's life. I had an experience with an osteopath when I was 14, I couldn't play sport anymore. I went to all different practitioners and then found an osteopath and within a week I felt like I was back to normal. I was like, I really want to be able to do that and help people.
I chose to study at Southern Cross University because there's only three universities in Australia that actually do osteopathy and I really love the lifestyle near the beach.
I actually started playing rugby because of the university team. Some rugby competitions that I've previously played in is college rugby in America, the University Series in Australia, Super W in Australia. Three skills that I've taken from rugby into university life would probably be dedication, commitment and perseverance.
For someone that doesn't know what an osteopath is, we are manual therapists. We look at all aspects of people's lives, mental health, physical health, any previous injuries that they've had, and we take into consideration everything. We make a working diagnosis for the person to understand what's going on with their body, and then we do a lot of techniques that might involve stretching, joint manipulation and we give lifestyle advice.
One of the highlights of my university studies was probably coming into the university Health Clinic and applying all my undergraduate knowledge into practice with patients and getting help from supervisors and seeing the changes that I could make as an osteopath.
Some advice I would give to aspiring female athletes is to remember why they do it, because we're passionate about the sport. And not to forget that because often when it comes to trying to juggle life, training, uni commitments, you kind of forget why you're doing it. So always remembering your why.
