Artists from Southern Cross University and throughout the region are invited to get out their paintboxes and shake out their smocks and come up with an artwork thematically linked to current global and local troubles.

The second annual Dayspring Art Award, co-ordinated by Southern Cross University chaplain John Kidson, is now open with entries closing on September 30. The award is for paintings, and offers $700 in cash prizes and more than $200 worth of vouchers.

Mr Kidson said this year artists were invited to explore the theme: "Tsunamis, terrorism, trouble - global and local, yet 'the earth is the Lord's and everything in it' (Psalm 24)".

"Creativity just might turn depression, related to the harsh reality of world events, into expression," Mr Kidson said.

Mr Kidson said he welcomed entries from artists at SCU campuses at Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Tweed Gold Coast, or from artists residing in the surrounding communities. Entries are limited to two per person, and owing to space constraints artworks must be less than 1.2 metres wide.

"The award is to encourage artists to explore the nexus between their spirituality and creativity, with the extra element of world events being added to the competition this year," he said.

The 2005 Dayspring Art Award will be judged by Dr Lindsay Farrell, from Australian Catholic University and a former judge of the Blake Prize for Religious Art; Tim Mosely from SCU School of Visual Arts; and magazine illustrator Judi Pollard from Summerland Christian College.

Prizes for the 2005 Dayspring Art Award are:
• $500 cash first prize, the Eggins Prestige Homes Award.
• $200 cash second prize, the Grahams Lawyers Award.
• $100 voucher for People's Choice Prize, from SCU Campus Central.
• Special Mention prizes: $80 voucher from SCU Co-Op Bookshop; $30 voucher from the Left Bank Café, Lismore; $15 voucher from Unity's at SCU.

The exhibition will be at SCU Lismore campus's Dayspring Chapel, located in Goodman Plaza, with the opening on Friday October 7 from 5 to 7pm. The exhibition will be open for viewing on Tuesday to Friday until October 27.

Entries for the second annual Dayspring Art Award must be submitted on Friday September 30 between 8am and 6pm to the Dayspring Chapel. Entries can be submitted earlier by prior arrangement. Entry forms are available from SCU's Student Support Centre or Dayspring Chapel. For information contact the Dayspring Chapel at SCU on phone (02) 66203943.
