Chinese calligrapher takes part in festival

Southern Cross University's NEXT Gallery is hosting an exhibition by outstanding calligrapher Liu Can-ming, a member of the Academy of Chinese Calligraphers and chairman of the Youth Callligraphers Association of Jiangsu Province.

Mr Liu will also participate in two sessions at the Byron Bay Writers Festival. He will give an experimental calligraphy exhibition on August 5 at 4pm, with an introduction by Southern Cross University's Head of the Faculty of Arts Professor Paul Thom. He will also participate, along with a book illustrator and book collector, in the discussion group 'Books as Objects' on August 7 at 10.45am.

While exhibiting at Southern Cross University, Mr Liu will also present a calligraphy workshop to painting students in first-year of the visual arts program. He will be working with translators at his engagements in Australia.

Mr Liu is the Dean of the Art Department at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His work draws on rich Chinese artistic traditions.

The NEXT contemporary art space enriches the educational experience at Southern Cross University and enhances the development of contemporary arts practice in the region by providing an accessible community resource.

Upcoming exhibitions include the inaugural Southern Cross University Artists' Book Award (August 18 to September1) and the Campus Central Student Art Award (October 4 to 21).
