Don’t miss this day for HSC students

“A day not to be missed by any Higher School Certificate student” is how Marilyn Chaseling describes the annual HSC Day being held at Southern Cross University next Thursday, June 21.

“This is a fantastic, information-packed day for students and teachers that will give them a real insight into what HSC markers are looking for and the specific curriculum areas that need to have been thoroughly covered,” said Ms Chaseling, who coordinates the day for the School of Education.

“We have experts in many subject fields and people who have been marking HSC exam papers and setting exam questions for many years who will be sharing their expertise and knowledge.

“Students who attend can expect to get a real edge in performing well for their HSC exams and teachers can be reassured that they have covered the coursework thoroughly and pick up any gaps.”

About 900 students and 100 teachers from regional schools stretching from Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Grafton in the south, to the Tweed Coast in the north and west to Tenterfield and Glenn Innes, will be attending the day.

Subject areas being covered include: English (including extension 2 and 3), maths (including extension 1 and 2), biology, chemistry, physics, visual arts, retail, general skills, legal studies, music, PDHPE, modern history, ancient history, history extension, hospitality and business studies.

The presenters have been chosen for their proven knowledge and expertise and include award-winning teachers who have had many years’ experience in teaching.

This year there is also a session for hospitality teachers being run by Yvette Kennedy, hospitality teacher at De La Salle College, Cronulla. Yvette has 17 years of teaching and 15 years of HSC marking experience.

She will cover core units and marking, resources, examination preparation of students, assessment validation, and organisation of the course to promote quality teaching practices and gain maximum benefit for students.

‘From Guidelines to Marks to UAI’ is a session being run by David Chapple, deputy principal at Caringbah High School in Sydney. Mr Chapple was a HSC supervisor of marking for five years. He also led teams that developed syllabus and performance bands for the new HSC.

Admittance to sessions for students is via a pre-paid ticket available for $25 from all regional high schools. There is no charge for teachers. The annual day is an initiative of Southern Cross University, the Department of Education and Training and Catholic Education.
