Active Bystander Media Competition

What would you do if it were you?

Introducing the winning piece...

A huge thank you to all the talented students who participated.

The piece named "What if it were you?" was created by Vitoria Lemes da Rosa Pinto, an international English Language Program student based at the Gold Coast campus.

"My video briefly demonstrates how people should act when we witness some disrespectful attitude from someone. How small attitudes can make a big difference.

The video reports a scenario that happens within a university environment, where a person is always focused and studying. Someone makes a mean comment to this person who is quiet and focused. "You think you're waiting, don't you?" And the colleagues instead of helping starts laughing and does nothing.

The person who heard the mean comment feels bad and embarrassed. At this moment someone observes and does not like the attitude of colleagues, those who laughed and the person who made the mean comment. What to do in this case? What would you do?

Every day we can experience attitudes like this and we must realise that this cannot happen and that we must act and offer help later."

Update to Competition Process – Monday, 10 November 2025

Due to the lower-than-expected number of entries received for the Active Bystander Multimedia Competition, the originally advertised “Round 2” student voting stage showcasing the Top 8 entries will not proceed in its original format.

Instead, the University will proceed with student voting for the two entries that met the published selection criteria. Voting will start on 17 November 2025 and remain open until 28 November 2025.

The two entries receiving the highest number of votes will be awarded prizes of $500 and $100 respectively. The $1,000 prize originally allocated for the top entry will not be awarded. All other entrants who submitted a valid entry but did not meet the selection criteria will receive a Power Bank and Travel Adaptor in recognition of their effort and participation. The People’s Choice Award will also not proceed.

All entrants will be contacted to confirm their understanding of this change and asked to provide written consent by 5:00 pm, Wednesday 12 November 2025. Please note that the University will only proceed to assess entries where consent is received from all participants. If consent is not received from all entrants, the University may be required to reassess the competition structure, which could include cancelling the voting stage, removing the recognition prize from ineligible entrants, and subsequently determining outcomes via an alternative method.

This update ensures that all variations to the original process are made transparently and with the agreement of participants. It was published on Monday, 10 November 2025 and supersedes the originally advertised “Round 2” student voting stage.
