HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS GET A FEEL FOR THE LAW

More than 220 Year 11 students from sixteen high schools between Coffs Harbour and the Tweed are visiting Southern Cross University's Lismore campus today, Wednesday, 5 December for an introduction to Legal Studies at university level.

The Legal Studies day will focus on the areas of Human Rights and Criminal Law, with SCU academic staff and local legal practitioners delivering one-hour lectures.

According to the Head of SCU's School of Law & Justice, Associate Professor Brian Fitzgerald, the day has been planned in conjunction with the North Coast Legal Studies Teachers'Association and is being coordinated by Andy George from Casino High School and Paul Milgate of Xavier College, Lennox Head.

"The Year 11 Legal Studies day allows the University to reach out to young people in the community who have an interest in legal studies," Professor Fitzgerald said. "It will provide them with an academic and practical view of current criminal law and human rights issues. In this way the Law School is hoping to promote a way in which research and teaching at tertiary level can flow out to the community".

After an introductory lecture at 9.30am, the lectures will run from 10.00am to 3.00pm with an hour's break for lunch on-campus. Students and participating staff will be available for interview.
