LEADING LAWYERS SIGN UP FOR BYRON BAY LAW SCHOOL

Some of Australia's top academic and practising lawyers will be joined by an impressive selection of international experts at the fourth annual Byron Bay Summer Law School to be hosted by Southern Cross University from 7-21 December, 2001.
"The Byron Bay Summer Law School has now become a well-regarded event attended by Law undergraduates from various Australian universities, practitioners wishing to enhance their skills and anyone seeking professional upgrading in fields relevant to their work," said SCU's Head of Law, Associate Professor Fitzgerald. Places at the School were still available, he added.
The high profile presenters will include -
o Dr. Lee Bygrave, an expatriate Australian, senior research fellow at the Norwegian Research Centre for Computers and Law, a recognised authority on privacy and personal data protection laws
o Professor David Sorkin from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, a Cyberlaw expert who also specialises in privacy and information issues and consumer law
o Justice Greg James from the Supreme Court of NSW
o Greg Mellick SC, a barrister experienced in diverse legal fields who headed the recent inquiry into 'cricket corruption'
o Peter Coroneos, Executive Director of the Internet Industry Association
o Linda Mensch, a US-based entertainment law specialist who directs ChinaPop, a division of China Online
o Brett Oaten, a specialist in show business matters whose clients include top acts such as silverchair, Powerfinger and Kasey Chambers
Other presenters are drawn from the ranks of the legal profession in both Sydney and Brisbane as well as organisations such as the Australian Tax Office and the Internet Industry Association, plus overseas universities and Southern Cross University itself. The units offered are Introduction to American Law (7-15 Dec.), Cyberlaw (8-14 Dec.), Privacy & the Private Sector (8-14 Dec.), International Criminal Justice (15-21 Dec.) and Entertainment Law (15-21 Dec)
"We have again managed to attract a top-class group of speakers and the program will be of the highest order, covering a range of topics with strong contemporary relevance," Prof. Fitzgerald added. "The unique atmosphere of Byron Bay in mid-summer adds another dimension to what will be a stimulating and highly enjoyable experience".
The Byron Bay Summer Law School will be held at the centrally located Lord Byron Resort and a social program is being planned for the Byron Bay area.
The cost of the Byron Bay Summer Law School is $890* per subject forstudents and $1100* for others (*GST free as either a higher education course or a course that contributes to the participants employment related
skills.
